was designed as a competitor for the Beechcraft’s King Air. It was built to be “cheaper, faster and easier to maintain than the Beechcraft” – Business Jet Traveller.
Operating in a single pilot with four passenger configuration the aircraft has a range of 1,300 nautical mile range with 230-mile reserve. With seats full and 300 pounds of baggage, the airplane can still take on almost 300 gallons of fuel, giving it a range of 600-700 nautical miles with reserves. It is certified for single pilot and Flight Safety International offers simulator training.
The Cheyenne has de-rated 850 horsepower PT-6A engines which generate 720 shaft horsepower per side. While flying at 29,000ft that translates into 77 gallons per hour while cruising 270kts, and opening the throttles at 22,000ft the Cheyenne can reach 290kts. The Cheyenne III is certified to a MTOW of 11,200 pounds, lighter than initially planned by piper but this leads to “hot-rod” like performance, “we never take off with full power” says a Florida pilot.
The Cheyenne III is five feet longer than the II and is still light on the controls with a balanced feel. With the props hung so far forward this leads to a pleasant cabin environment as it escapes a large amount of prop beat usually associated with propeller aircraft. However, the long narrow fuselage does require careful balanced loading, this is easily offset by the big nose which can swallow 300 pounds, which is also matched by the 300 pounds in the aft baggage hold. The wing lockers can take an additional 100 pounds each.
“A Cheyenne III will cost $50 to $100 less per hour to maintain than a King Air.”

The operator is its third owner and Ian has sold it to the last 2 owners and knows the aircraft well.
